Samsung to Unveil Broadband HDTVs with Embedded Skype Capability

Skype announces that the new Samsung LED 7000 and 8000 series models of 2010 high-definition televisions will feature embedded Skype software allowing Skype users to make video and voice calls through the TVs. Samsung, the global market leader in televisions, will begin shipping TVs with Skype software in the Korean market today, and worldwide in the first half of 2010.

The debut of Samsung’s Skype-enabled televisions reinforces Skype’s commitment to making its video and voice calling capabilities available on a full range of Internet-connected devices, including TVs. Televisions with built-in Skype software were first introduced at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January 2010.

Carrier VoIP Continues to Transform Mobile/Fixed Networks

Synergy Research Group announces the publication of Carrier VoIP Q4 2009 and YE 2009 market shares. The worldwide market for Carrier VoIP totaled just over $10 billion for the full year 2009. Year over year, the market fell 18 percent; significantly less than drops measured in other Telecom and IT equipment markets. The biggest drivers for Carrier VoIP traditionally have been migrating aging TDM PSTN switches to VoIP platforms; in the last 24 months further growth has been added with Mobile Operators pursuing the Capex and OpEx advantages of IP as did the Wireline networks before it.

GENBAND Selected to Acquire Nortel’s CVAS Assets

GENBAND will acquire substantially all assets of the Nortel Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions Business. The acquisition is subject to court and certain regulatory approvals in Canada, the United States and other jurisdictions, as well as other closing conditions.

The acquisition will combine GENBAND’s next-generation media, session and security gateway technologies and Nortel’s softswitch, media gateway and application technologies, offering service providers a best-in-class, end-to-end switching and global services portfolio.

VocalTec Receives Order of Around $1M from Russian Tier-1 Operator
