Nortel Inks Deal with Clearwire to Provide Residential VoIP Services

Nortel has signed a contract with wireless broadband pioneer Clearwire to deliver a complete carrier VoIP solution to provide a residential VoIP service to Clearwire's U.S. customers. Nortel will also provide services to Clearwire from its Global Services portfolio, including network engineering, multi-vendor network integration, network deployment and support.

Clearwire's Internet Phone Service is currently available in 37 of the company's 46 markets in the U.S. and works with their customers' existing high-speed Internet access to provide unlimited local and long-distance calling from a regular telephone. The Nortel solution will provide end-to-end carrier VoIP infrastructure for Clearwire's Internet Phone Service, while laying the foundation for Clearwire to easily evolve their network to potentially deliver converged fixed and mobile services.

Nortel is supplying complete end-to-end carrier VoIP infrastructure and services solution for Clearwire. The solution is based on Nortel's Application Server 5200 to deliver SIP applications including voice, call management, desktop video calling, collaboration tools, and personalization services. Nortel will also supply its Communication Server 2000, an IP multimedia softswitch that delivers network infrastructure services and supports a wide range of voice and multimedia features based on the open, industry-standard SIP protocol.

Nortel's complete carrier VoIP solution supports the explosion in demand for new communication services being driven by Hyperconnectivity, a global trend where anything that can be connected to the network, will be connected. To address this demand for services and the rapid growth of enterprise and residential subscribers, carriers are using Nortel's VoIP and multimedia service solutions to deploy new communications technologies that converge voice, video and data services onto one network to improve quality of service while reducing costs. They are also using Nortel's Global Services to accelerate cost-effective deployment of these technologies into multi-vendor networks.
