Mindspeed Launches VoIP Open-Source Software

Mindspeed Technologies Inc., a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced its OpenMind development program that enables voice-over-IP (VoIP) system designers to gain a competitive advantage by combining the company's Comcerto processors with open-source applications and other products and design services from its growing network of third-party companies. Mindspeed's OpenMind program provides customers with a broad range of development choices to increase design flexibility and accelerate their time to market. The company will demonstrate OpenMind solutions in booth 402 at the Fall VON 2005 Conference & Expo, Sept. 19-22, at the Boston Convention Center.

"This is the first developer program of its kind that lets equipment designers take full advantage of the burgeoning array of open-source VoIP and data-routing applications now flooding the market," said Steven McClure, executive director of marketing for Mindspeed. "Customers can tap into our expanding ecosystem of resources to combine our Comcerto processor platform with open-source applications and then add customized features and capabilities. We have already joined forces with more than a dozen companies to give our customers freedom of choice across a broad range of hardware, software, support and services," McClure added.

Mindspeed's OpenMind program helps to facilitate the new standards-based VoIP development model using the company's single-chip Comcerto open-source processing platform, which integrates an application control and signaling processor with a real-time media-stream processor to provide a deterministic architecture capable of scaling from data-only applications to full packet telephony capabilities operating on hundreds of voice channels. Mindspeed's OpenMind program adds to this optimized mixed-media silicon platform a rich library of open-source applications and a collaborative network of development and manufacturing resources including silicon providers, software and application suppliers, contract manufacturers, turnkey original design manufacturers (ODMs) and hardware designers.

Mindspeed's OpenMind community is already forging a new standards-based design approach for next-generation VoIP equipment. OpenMind participants have experience working with the Comcerto processing platform and are currently developing Comcerto-based VoIP designs with leading VoIP equipment manufacturers worldwide. Depending on customer requirements, Mindspeed can now mobilize OpenMind program partners across each step of the design-to-manufacturing development chain from software development to contract manufacturing, lower design costs and complexity while speeding time to market. Current OpenMind program participants include:

Software Application Developers:
  • ARM, Askey, Digium, Flextronics, LynuxWorks, M5T, Netbricks, Psytechnics
Design Services Providers:
  • Askey, Flextronics, Firmix, Teleca, Viking InterWorks
Turnkey ODM Solutions Providers:
  • Askey, Flextronics, TelcoBridges, Telrad, Viking InterWorks
