VoIP Solution from Nortel and Quintum Technologies

Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) in Phoenix, Arizona has deployed Nortel's CS 1000, along with Tenor VoIP switches from Quintum Technologies, enabling realization of significant advantages offered by Voice over IP service as compared to their traditional phone system.

DVUSD, which covers nearly 400 square miles and encompasses 37 schools, deployed Nortel's Communication Server 1000 system to provide IP phone support throughout the entire district. The Nortel CS 1000 provides significant advantages, including shared data and voice network resources and centralized administration and management. With a single CS 1000 system, Voice over IP service is provided to all facilities throughout the district.

One of DVUSD's requirements in transitioning to Voice over IP was integration of a variety of analog systems into their new VoIP-based network. Quintum Tenor switches have earned the Nortel Compatible Product designation through interoperability testing with Nortel's CS 1000. The Tenor VoIP switches provide branch office support for legacy analog systems and local connectivity to the public telephone network. Tenor VoIP switches were deployed in all remote locations to support fax machines, analog phones, and modem-based devices, such as postage meters requiring funds transactions by modem, security alarm systems access, and control of irrigation timing and support systems. All these analog devices and services continue to be supported on the new Voice over IP network.

"We were thrilled at how easily the Tenors integrated into our network," said Dave Hatfield, District Manager of Technical Services for DVUSD. "We've been impressed by the cost-savings and efficiencies recognized by moving to Voice over IP using Nortel's Communication Server 1000. The relationship between Nortel and Quintum simplified our migration and gave us confidence around interoperability of the total solution. After the initial successful pilot, over 33 Tenors were deployed in 2 weeks, without complication."

"We are simplifying the way our customers do business with Nortel by giving our customers access to Nortel compatible products that can be deployed along with the Communication Server 1000," said Alex Pierson, vice president and general manager, Enterprise and SMB Communication Systems, Nortel. "Nortel is committed to offering open, standards-based interfaces, enabling companies like Quintum to deliver products which expand the functionality of Nortel platforms and offer customers choice and flexibility when implementing VoIP."

"Nortel's CS 1000 solution is providing businesses and schools a combination of new capabilities and cost savings using VoIP technology, and Quintum is pleased to partner with Nortel to enable continued support of analog devices and services as companies migrate toward Voice over IP," said Chuck Rutledge, Vice President of Marketing for Quintum Technologies. "DVUSD is an excellent example of the need to efficiently integrate existing systems with new VoIP technology, allowing them to experience the benefits of VoIP while minimizing the disruption to the systems they depend upon."
