Fraunhofer IIS Makes Full-HD Voice Available for VoIP Apps

Fraunhofer IIS will showcase how its Full-HD Voice codec, Enhanced Low Delay AAC, supercharges the communication quality of any VoIP app, be it for smartphones, tablets or televisions at CES 2013.

Natively supported in iOS and Android, the AAC-ELD codec is now readily available to app developers and service providers to offer superior VoIP applications that run at the Full-HD Voice quality level. This delivers a completely new same-room communication experience to the end-user.

"From mobile phones to TVs, consumers expect the highest audio quality from their entertainment experiences. There is no reason the expectations for VoIP communication should be any different," said Harald Popp, head of the Multimedia Realtime Systems department at Fraunhofer IIS. "By providing developers direct, native access to the best codecs to deliver Full-HD Voice VoIP apps, consumers can expect the best quality possible."

Fraunhofer's Full-HD Voice technology is already widely used to provide CD-like audio quality for professional video conferencing systems, as well as consumer video telephony applications, such as apple FaceTime. With AAC-ELD now available in iOS and Android, this same level of professional communication quality can be readily deployed in consumer VoIP apps.

App developers can access the natively-integrated AAC-ELD codec through the Fraunhofer FDK Codec Library in Android since version 4.1 and in iOS since version 4.0 as well as in OSX, allowing cross-platform deployment of Full-HD Voice.

Background Information on Audio Quality in Communication Systems

Historically, the audio quality of VoIP services has been similar to legacy telephony, with a maximum audio bandwidth of 3.4 kHz. Recently, some services have offered a higher audio bandwidth of 7 kHz, which is still quite limited compared to 20 kHz which is the maximum bandwidth humans are able to hear. Another reason for the limited audio quality of phone calls is usage of speech codecs. As their algorithms emulate a single human vocal tract, they are only optimized for a single speaker in a quiet environment. Speech codecs do not deliver other signals clearly, such as ambience sounds, music and background noise. The result is compromised audio quality in conversations and highly distorted background sounds or music.

With the state-of-the-art MPEG-4 communication codec AAC-ELD, app developers can easily offer a level of performance that removes the limitations of speech codecs and offers the full audio bandwidth of up to 20 kHz, giving voice, music, and ambience sounds equal treatment.

Vonage Granted Mobile VoIP Handoff Patent

South Korea has one of the world's most vibrant IP Communications markets in the world backed by strong support from the government. Mobile VoIP Users to Reach 640m by 2016

Mobile VoIP specialists are expected to favour alliances with social media, gaming and software partners over partnerships with mobile network operators in coming years, as social media becomes ever more mainstream, finds Juniper Research.

Juniper Research anticipates that the role of voice within the broader communications market will change, and it will become increasingly available as an extension to other applications. Companies such as Vivox are pioneering such services in the gaming industry, and Skype's acquisition by Microsoft and several Facebook alliances with VoIP providers will accelerate this trend, finds the report 'Mobile Voice & Video Calling: Strategic Opportunities & Business Models 2011-2016'.

Meanwhile mVoIP clients downloaded to the smartphone will account for four fifths of 640 million mobile VoIP users by the end of 2016, as momentum behind carrier alliances and mVoIP start-ups diminishes.

Improved technology, more intuitive interfaces and increased user awareness all account for the increasing dominance of the app download model for mVoIP, finds Juniper Research.

Further findings include:

The number of mobile video calling users will exceed 130 million by 2016, spurred by the launch of mobile video calling by major players and technology improvements.
Mobile VoIP and mobile video calling services will develop significantly faster in developed markets due to a correlation between 3G and 4G roll outs and the take up of mobile VoIP and mobile video calling.
There is as yet no clear role for advertising within the mobile VoIP and mobile video calling business model, though this is beginning to come for VoIP on the desktop.

Vox Communications Now Offering Free Use of Its Android Internet Calling App

VoX Communications is now allowing free usage of its mobile VoIP app for all Android mobile phones and Android tablets.

Pervasip's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Riss, noted, "We have updated our Android VoIP app so that any Android user can download it, make free calls and send free text messages to others who have our app. Earlier this month, we launched our Android app and required a fee of $4.95 to sign up for services and receive a telephone number. We had more than 1,000 downloads in the first week, and many people want to try the free calling before they use our service for inexpensive calls to landlines or other mobile phones. We have adjusted the product so that anyone who downloads the app can now try it without making a payment."

A VoX subscriber can subscribe entirely on the phone without leaving the interface. For consumers who wish to call a phone number outside the VoX network, the mobile VoIP plans start at $4.95 per month. VoX also offers 500 minutes of calling for $9.95, and $29.95 for unlimited calling to the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Riss continued, "Free calls are also available from the Android device to an Ojo Vision Video phone that runs on the VoX network. We are very excited about the quality and multiple uses provided by the app, and we have already met with a tablet manufacturer to demonstrate how well the app works on an Android tablet."
