IP phones are enabling businesses and consumers to use their telephone system for more advanced communications, says Norm Bogen, VP Digital Entertainment. These applications are more clearly understood in the enterprise space, where IP-based communication is replacing TDM networks at a steady pace. On the consumer side, the market for Wi-Fi phones has not materialized, instead, DECT phones dominate the consumer IP phone market.

- Cisco and Avaya are leading the market for enterprise IP phones. Among other major competitors are Aastra, Alcatel-Lucent, LG , Mitel, NEC, Polycom, ShoreTel, and Siemens.
- Outside of service provider deployments and Skype, consumer adoption of VoIP has been minimal.
- Business Wi-Fi/Cellular Phone Shipments grew by nearly 40% in 2010 over 2009. Among the leading handset OEMs in the dual-mode segment, HTC saw the biggest share gain.
